This will be the last total lunar eclipse until the year 2010.

For those in Earth's Western Hemisphere, Wednesday night should provide an interesting light show, as a total eclipse of the moon will be visible—weather permitting of course.

Total Lunar EclipseAccording to astronomers, the lunar eclipse is caused by the direct alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon. The Earth's atmosphere deflects residual light, most of which is in the red part of the spectrum, causing the moon to have a reddish, or copper hue. (Photo: AFP)

Wednesday's lunar eclipse will be seen as "total" by those who are east of the Rocky Mountains in North America, Central America, Western Europe and Western Africa, with the "zenith of totality" near French Guiana. The eclipse will last from 0301 GMT to 0351 GMT, but can be seen partially before and after that time.

In addition, during the eclipse, the moon will be surrounded by the star Regulus (also known as the "king" star) and the planet Saturn.
